Chapel Hill - Home of the Tar Heels!

Chapel Hill is the home of the University of North Carolina "Tar Heels". Located in the southeastern section of Orange County, Chapel Hill is a typical college town bustling with activity both day and night. Chartered in 1789, UNC began undergraduate instruction in 1795 and is the oldest public university in the U.S. In 1949, the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center opened on the UNC campus. Although UNC is nationally known for its basketball and football teams, its most outstanding contribution to North Carolina is its UNC Health Care System and associated medical school. The UNC Health Care System has several hospitals and special care facilities located in Chapel Hill and surrounding areas. Orange County maintains a Senior Center in North Chapel Hill. This center provides activities and help for the seniors in the area.

Housing in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area varies from small rental homes near the university to large luxurious estates in the outlying areas. The home prices in this area reflect the proximity to UNC and tend to be higher priced than in other parts of Orange County. Taxes in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area are also higher than in other parts of the county.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District is known as one of the best school districts in the state of North Carolina. There are four high schools in the district – Carrboro High School, Chapel Hill High School, East Chapel Hill High School and Middle College High School . There are also two public charter schools (Woods Charter(PK-12) and Willow Oak Montessori (1-6)) and several private schools (Emerson Waldorf (PK-12), Montessori Day School (NS-6),and St. Thomas More Catholic School (PK-8)) in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. Chapel Hill and Carrboro have numerous daycare facilities available for the working family.
